A Political Assassination on The Bosphorus and A Siege in The Gulf: A Geopolitical Perspective
Continuing with its academic engagements, the Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA) is hosting an extension lecture on November 21, 2018 to discuss the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and the blockade of Qatar.
Political commentator, Prof Dr Majed Al-Ansari, from Qatar University will deliver a talk on the blockade of Qatar by four Gulf Council Cooperation (GCC) members led by Saudi Arabia.
Director CIGA and Public Affairs Professor at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (IZU), Prof Dr Sami Al-Arian, shall discuss the murder of noted journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. An alleged 15-member hit-team, who flew from Saudi Arabia in early October, killed Khashoggi inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul resulting in global outrage against the barbaric act.

Who is Prof Dr Majed Al-Ansari?
Dr Al-Ansari is a Professor of Political Sociology at Qatar University. He is a Researcher at the the
Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI). He received his PhD and master’s degree in social transformation from the University of Manchester, and wrote a thesis entitled, “A Minority of Citizens: The Effects of Religious, Social and Political Values on Trust in Expatriates in Qatar”.
Dr Al Ansari previously served at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various civil society institutions. His research interests include public opinion surveys, social resources, political and religious values, charity work and political analysis of domestic and regional issues.
Who is Prof Dr Sami Al-Arian?
Dr Sami Al-Arian is the Director of the
Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA) and Public Affairs Professor at
Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (IZU). He received his PhD in Computer Engineering in 1986 and was a tenured academic in the US for many years receiving several teaching awards and grants, as well as having over forty publications to his credit.
During his four decades in the US (1975-2015), Dr Al- Arian founded numerous institutions and publications in the fields of education, research, religion and interfaith, as well as civil and human rights. He was a prolific speaker across many US campuses, especially on Palestine, Islam and the West, and Civil Rights.
In 2001, he was named by the Newsweek the “premiere civil rights activist” in the US for his efforts to repeal the use of Secret Evidence in immigration courts.
In 2012, he was profiled by historians of the Encyclopedia of American Dissidents as one of only three Muslims in the US out of 152 US dissidents and prisoners of conscience in the past century included in the two- volume series (along with Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali).
